The company was launched in 1921,
when the Toto Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd. began its commercial
shearing of steel products for Japan's rapidly expanding
industrial sector. Topy's history has consistently mirrored that
of the overall Japanese national economic growth from its rapid
modernization, and then struggling recovery to overcome the
hardship of rebuilding a war-shattered economy.
In 1964, the four primary members of the Toto's group (Toto
Steel Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Japan Motor Wheel Co., Ltd., Toto
Machinery Co., Ltd., and Toto Steel Structure Co., Ltd.) merged
to boost their combined strength and efficiency. The newly
formed Topy Industries had positioned as a major force in
Japan's already formidable metal-processing industry. With this
merger, the Company sought to integrate its metal-processing
capabilities, while encouraging the newly formed divisions to
target commercially attractive niches in their respective
markets. The Topy trademark conveys the corporate ideal of
maintaining superlative quality throughout a fully integrated
range of operations from steel production to processing.
Topy is a pioneer in the vertical integration of its operations,
